After the recording of the band's debut album In the Court of the Crimson King, McDonald and Giles left King Crimson in January 1970 after playing their last show on 16 December 1969. Fripp, Lake and Sinfield recorded the band's second album In the Wake of Poseidon with a temporary lineup featuring Giles, his brother Peter Giles and Mel Collins .
