The 500 was the brainchild of the brilliant Dante Giacosa, who became Fiat's technical director at the end of World War II. The 500 was to supersede another of Giacosa's designs, the rear-engine 600, but, unlike that car, was to feature air cooling, which the director felt would be more practical and economical.
